RUDOLPH VALENTINO

1895 - 1926

Rudolph Valentino was the son of a military man who sent him to militiary school at the age of thirteen. Valentino failed miserably at the military school. He then attempted to study agriculture. However, soon he left military school and headed to Paris. There he became a street beggar because of a lack of personal opportunities. He even got arrested on suspicion of petty theft and blackmail.

Valentino then headed to New York City. He moved into a home of Italian immigrants and began landscape gardening. He soon was discharged from this position and began a litany of odd jobs, including waitering and dishwashing.

Valentino was attracted to the glitter and glamor of the Broadway district of New York and so he became a taxi driver there. It was here that he first broke into show business. He replaced the infamous Clifton Webb as the partner of Bonnie Glass, who was a famous dancer at the time. Soon after changing partners, valentino was arrested again and spent time in a famous New York jail called the Tombs.

Soon after being released from jail, Valentino became active in a casting company that was located in Ogden, Utah. Unfortunately, though, the casting company went out of business rather quickly and so he moved to San Francisco. There he became a dancer once again.

Valentino arrived in Hollywood in 1917. He started out in positions as an exotic dancer and as a villan. In 1920 he married actress Jean Acker. The marriage never was consummated because Acker locked him out of the bridal suite on the first night of their Honeymoon. Valentino then started concentrating more seriously just on his career.
