TOM MIX

1880-1940

Tom Mix was a legendary cowboy star of the early screen era. He made both silent and voiced movies. Mix claimed to be the son of a cavalry officer and boasted of having been educated at the Virginia Military Institute. However, evidence later indicated that his father was a poor lumberman and that Mix had dropped out of school after the fourth grade. There was evidence that he had been a deserter from the U.S. Artillery in 1902 after serving as a sergeant.

However, Mix later served as a Texas Ranger for a very brief period. His unglorious past was a not a detriment to Tom Mix as a Texas Ranger and later as an actor.
