MARY PICKFORD
Born: Gladys Smith
1893 - 1979
Mary Pickford was born Gladys Smith in April of 1893.
Her father died when she was five years old and she was forced into the
role of helping her mother raise her siblings. Perhaps it was her early
maturity that led to her assertiveness in acquiring starring roles in films
starting in 1909. Pickford knew how to talk to producers so as to convince
them that she was the right actress for the important roles. Her decisiveness,
talent, maturity and persistence won her a very productive career in dozens
of films. The film industry owes a great deal to the legacy set by this
classic actress.
