Gregory Peck 1916-

If anyone could be said to have profited from substituting for actors who were absent from The Silver Screen to fight in a World War, Gregory Peck would take the cake. Had it not been for the war and for the subsequent absence of many famous actors, perhaps Peck's career never would have taken off.

As a student at University of California, Berkeley, studying acting, Peck had exposure to the right people. He was successful at enrolling at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse and had a very successful debut in Emlyn William's "The Morning Star" in 1942.

Pecks' career skyrocketed from there. He received several Oscar nominations for the following films: The Keys of the Kingdom, The Yearling, Gentleman's Agreement, and Twelve O'Clock High. The greatest acclaim of his early career was the best actor Academy Award for his performance as the profoundly ethical Atticus French in To Kill a Mockingbird.
