One of television's most
popular game shows ever,"The Newlywed Game" originally aired
on July 11, 1966 on ABC. The game ran for more than eight straight years
the first time; making it the 23rd- longest-running television game show
ever. The show went into syndication in the 1970's and was highly successul
in that format as well. "The Newlywed Game" is played in two
rounds, each designed to uncover what recently married couples know about
each other. During the half-hour program, four couples married less than
two years play against each other to win a fabulous second honeymoon. In
the first segment of the game, the wives are brought offstage to a soundproof
room. Their husbands then guess how they will answer some questions posed
by host Bob Eubanks. When the wives return to the stage, they attempt to
answer the questions. Each matching response results in a point for the
couple. The second segment has the wives guessing how their husbands will
answer when the men come out from the soundproof booth. The game ends with
a "bonus question" that is worth more points than the other questions."
The top-scoring couple at the conclusion of the game wins the grand prize:
a second honeymoon vacation package.
The show recently has returned
to its original format, thus once again making it one of the most successful
game shows ever. Bob Eubanks is particularly talented at exposing the funny
nuances and personality quirks of the couples, thus making the show even
funnier as it progresses.
