We must admit that there will be countless inventions and innovations in the twenty-first century that we cannot possibly forsee in any way whatsoever at this time . However, we can have some fun making at least some predictions about the first few years of the new century based on some of the patterns that already are emerging. Here then are a few of my predictions for the twenty-first century:

1) I predict that new movies will be released on the Internet on a subscription basis when they first come out, instead of appearing first in the theaters like they do today.

2) I predict that conventional movie theaters will be used as places to experience movies on "the big screen," rather than as places to see movies as they primiere.

3) I predict the emergence of movies that center around the loneliness and isolation that have arisen as problems for many people in our highly technological society.

4) With the advent of interest in interplanetary exploration among our government officials, I predict that there will be a whole gamut of science fiction movies made about travel to Mars, Venus, Jupiter, the Sun, and even other universes!

5) As the generation X-ers start growing up and running the movie industry, I predit that there will be a decrease in movies about violence and an increase in movies about love, passion, loneliness, isolation, and romance.

6) With many religious leaders today talking about the "New Millenuim," I predict that there will be many new movies about the "new age" from a religious viewpoint.

7) I predict that there will be many new movies about how cancer, heart disease and AIDS wiped out so many lives in the twentieth century, as these diseases are eliminated through scientific research in the twenty-first century.

8) I predict that there will be many more movies about education as our society spends more and more money on education and the schools.

9) I predict the emergence of more television shows that don't use canned laughter as our new, interactive technologies will antiquate such things. I predict that email and other Internet-related innovations will provide for live, interactive "laughter" to comedy television, as it is channeled in live from around the world on people's home computers.

10) I predict that movie-making technology will advance to the point of allowing, for the first time, "live" movies that are made as the audience watches. Furthermore, I predict that such movies will allow audience participation via the Internet, in much the same way that the audience will partipate in interactive, live television.

In conclusion, I want to reiterate that there is no way that I can predict fully or even accurately what is going to occur in the world of Hollywood, television and movie-making in the twenty-first century. However, although my specific predictions may not be exactly accurate, I believe that I have highlighted some of the patterns that very well may emerge as the twenty-first century unfolds.
