1.) More often than not, California
is the very first state to receive snowfall at the beginning of each season.
2.) In terms of total cubic units of snow for a given season, California
generally receives the most snow, even more than that of Colorado.
3.) California has the most active glaciers of any state in the continental
United States.
4.) Unlike the much colder midwestern states where snow evaporates between
snowfalls, the snow in the High Sierra of California tends to stay on the
ground for the entire season, thus keeping much of California under a blanket
of white for several months of the year. The high water content of California
snow is partly responsible for the fact that California snow does not evaporate
as readily as midwestern snow.
5.) Because of the Arctic microclimates produced at the summits where glaciers
abound, California generally is the only state where it predictably snows
twelve months out of the year. Even Alaska cannot boast of year-round snow
because of the month of 24 hour sun in the summer.

6.) California is one of the few states that truly can
claim to have a "snow economy." California's number one industry,
agriculture, depends 100% on irrigation from dams that were built tocapture
water run-off from melting snow in the mountains. Without the melting snow,
California has no water for irrigation and farming, and no industry for
the production of agricultural products, thus adveresely affecting the
economy of the entire state.
7.) California snow has the highest water content of any state, thus making
it the most valuable snow for agriculture and industry.
8.) California has some of the most famous and high-ranking ski resorts,
such as Bear Valley, Squaw Valley, Heavenly Valley and Dodge Ridge.
9.) Although California and the rest of the country could survive without
the tourism, industry, culture and resources of California's larger cities
where it does not snow, it would be extremely difficult for the entire
nation to sustain itself for long without California snow because of the
irrigation and agriculture from melting snow. California feeds the rest
of the country and the world and it cannot do so without its much needed
snowfall.
10.) The slogan"sunny California where it never rains" is largely
a product of Hollywood and the media and is extremely exaggerated. Besides,
the "sunny California" concept largely applies to the Los Angeles
Basin where it never snows.
And so the next time someone asks you if it snows
in California, provide them with these facts. Your friend will soon know
that you are an authority on California snow!
