Humphrey Bogart

1887 - 1953


Humphrey Bogart was born the son of a prominent surgeon in Andover, Massachusetts. Bogart once attended medical school but was expelled on disciplinary charges. He then entered the Navy and was the victim of a lip injury while on board The Leviathan while the vessel was being shelled. This is how Bogart acquired the famous tight lip and noticeable lisp.

After the war, Bogart worked as an office boy in a theater in Massachusetts. Bogart worked his way up the ladder at the theater and company road manager and stage manager. By this time, Bogart also was working at a New York theater which belonged to the same owner as the Massachusetts theater, William Brady.

Finally Bogart decided to try out acting. Bogart's first professional stage appearance was in the production, Swiftly in 1922. Bogart received bad reviews for his performance in this production. However, Bogart continued to appear in stage productions throughout the 1920's.

In 1930, Bogart decided to give Hollywood a try. His film debut was in a film called Broadway's Like That in 1930. After this screen appearance, Bogart's film career was very sporadic. He finally got a break and made a major appearance in the 1935 film, The Petrified Forest, in which he played the notorious gangster, Duke Mantee.

For the next five years, Bogart appeared in at least 28 films, one of which was the famous movie, The Maltese Falcon. Other very notable films in which Bogart appeared were Casablanca and Key Largo. Bogart married his bride, Laureen Bacall on the set of To Have and Have Not.

Bogart received an Academy Award for his appearance in The African Queen.
